Re-interpreting Today¡®s Myths
by Margareta Skantze

A seminar held at
5th International Women Playwrights Conference "Eros Theatrou"
Athens and Delphi 1/7 October 2000

Yesterday I saw a wonderful play Dictee based on texts by Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, adapted and staged by Kyong-Sook O, founder of the Korean theatre group Mythos. It summed up much of the themes of this seminar.

Dictee shows the initation process of a modern young Korean woman. It is a Grail legend with a female protagonist. In order to find her own identity she looks for her matrilinear heritage, her foremothers, her mother and her grandmother. She looks for the history of her own country. In her quest she is accompanied by a woman saint: Jeanne d¢¥Arc who is split in two, just as bewildered as the young and passionate female protagonist. Her dark hair is dyed blonde, the upper part of her body is dressed in armour concealing her breasts, whereas the lower part of her body is dressed in the most romantic and feminine dream of them all: the white fluffy skirt of a ballet dancer.

In her quest for her self the young woman turns to the Greek Muses hoping for an answer to her quest. Finally she finds her inner sacred space. The play ends with her standing behind a thin, thin veil looking into a beautiful sanctuary filled with music, golden sunrays and movement.
